Excursions:
Inti Raymi - during this Festival of the Sun in late June, hundreds of thousands of people converge upon Cuzco from other parts of the nation, South America and the world for a week long celebration marking the beginning of the new year. Every day has its events, from daytime expositions, street fairs, music, and people dancing and socializing in the streets.
Sacsayhuaman - this striking ceremonial center and stronghold lies on the outskirts of Cuzco and boasts an extensive system of underground passages that connects with other former Incan settlements near the city.
Machu Picchu - constructed around 1450 at the height of the Inca Empire, this "Lost City of the Incas" was abandoned less than 100 years later, as the empire collapsed under Spanish conquest. Located some 70 kilometers northwest of Cuzco, visitors can spend hours trekking through this marvel of human engineering melded perfectly into a natural setting of mountains and jungle.
The Inca Trail - Passing through the Andes mountain range and portions of the Amazon rainforest, this ancient Incan trail system passes several well-preserved Inca ruins and settlements before ending at the Sun Gate on Machu Picchu Mountain.
