Jobs for Former Teachers

Teaching English abroad provides great jobs for former teachers. If you’ve retired or left the teaching field because of the high stress of the American educational system and are considering returning, even part-time, teaching English abroad may be the perfect career for you.

International teaching jobs are more exciting, allow for the opportunity to travel, and build on skill sets and knowledge from previous teaching experience. The atmosphere is not as high-stress as there is only one subject to teach and schedules are flexible.

Students in these programs are more motivated to learn English as a foreign language to improve their lives or careers. They are taking this in addition to their education or to transition into their new economies.

Teaching jobs abroad are great for former teachers because they already have the experience and education in the field of teaching. This background can serve as a strong base for obtaining a TESOL (teaching English to Speakers of other languages) Certification. TESOL certification programs offers the skills and methodology needed to teach EFL (English as a foreign language) and because formers teachers have become comfortable and accustomed to the classroom environment, the TESOL course is more of a reinforcement and refresher course to introduce them to a foreign teaching environment.

The option of participating in the TESOL program overseas in the country of interest provides an even better opportunity to transition to the culture, meet people outside of the program and get accustomed to the new environment.

International education jobs are similar to the educational careers in the United States, but focus on the English language, writing and communication skills. These jobs are great for former teachers because they offer an opportunity to use their expertise and knowledge and participate in a different cultural experience.

With the high demand for English teachers in foreign countries job security is not an issue. You have the freedom to pick your schedules, contracts and locations. If you want to take a few months off and reconvene at a later date that is always an option. Schedules are not as rigid as the United States educational system. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life think about a career change to teach English abroad and begin your adventure of a lifetime.
