Today I’m happy to introduce a guest post by a LanguageCorps alum who spent time teaching English in Thailand.  He does a great job of thoroughly articulating all aspects of teaching English abroad, from the job search, to placement and beyond.  Enjoy!

Teaching English Abroad from Start To Finish

Dreams know no boundaries. They are subjectively-personalised but objectively-perceived. Are dreams only meant to give people hope that something better awaits them, yet more often than not, unattainable due to a whole host of factors, the most common being financial sacrifice, relationship commitments and plain inertia?

Well, I had a dream, one that was unfathomable to many, and even considered immature and irrational to the older generation because it seemed to signal a step backwards in this age of rapid societal progress and development. However, I was determined to carve out a path that veered greatly off the route of conformity on which the last 26 years of my life have built upon. My dream was to discover a lifestyle set in a rural region of Thailand, where I could sustain my livelihood by Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Five Ways Teaching English Abroad Can Help Any Career Path

“Why would I teach English abroad? I don’t even want to be a teacher!”

Madison Killen

To be fair, it’s a logical question. Yes, teaching english abroad is clearly an excellent opportunity for teachers, but what about the rest of us? Choosing to leave the country to teach probably sounds illogical to someone in medicine, business, law, or really anyone in any other field besides education. However, it turns out that teaching English abroad offers integral skills that can further any career. In an economy where–more and more– it is becoming necessary to differentiate yourself to employers, possessing these skills will fortify your arsenal.

Photographic Memoirs of a Traveling Teacher

In 2009, LanguageCorps hosted a Southeast Asia media contest for people Teaching English Abroad.  Chris Johnson in Thailand was one of the winners of that contest.  He put together a great photographic story of some his adventures while teaching English abroad, and I think it really does a great job showcasing just how much is possible if you take the plunge and join LanguageCorps.

I was looking back through those photos today, and thought it would be nice to lay the series out on the blog, so that you can follow Chris’s journey in a somewhat linear fashion.

Check out more of his work here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrchrisjohnson/sets/

Chris Johnson – Thailand

In February of 2009 I packed my life into an Osprey internal frame backpack and made my way to Southeast Asia to pursue a once in a lifetime experience as a Mathematics teacher in a foreign country.

First stop: LanguageCorps Training Facility in Phnom Penh, Cambodia…

Next stop: Bangkok Christian College Bangkok, Thailand…

Third Stop, Fourth, Stop, Fifth….: Well…. you’ll have to scroll through the album! :-)

Cheers!

The Vote Travel Movement

As a company that helps people to Teach English Abroad, LanguageCorps doesn’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about travel within our home base, the US.  But, when I received an email from Vote Travel, a movement sponsored by the US Travel Association, I found it thought provoking enough to warrant a semi political post.

Vote Travel is a first of it’s kind campaign, dedicated to promoting the interests of the travel industry within American politics.  According to their website, the American travel industry supports 14 million jobs that cannot be outsourced, and with our country facing its most serious economic difficulties since the great depression, what better time to promote this industry?

It’s an interesting idea.  We don’t often hear much about the travel industry in American politics.  But with a well funded, organized lobbying group backing the industry’s interests, perhaps that is about to change.  And while on the outset, LanguageCorps, the TESOL industry and this Vote Travel movement don’t seem to have much to do with one another, our company is interested in promoting all things travel related.  It is our belief that travel is one of the most important things one can do to evolve and progress as a human being, and any organization that promotes that belief, whether home or abroad, is a positive thing.

And perhaps the trickle down effect will be promoting alternative career options like Teaching English Abroad to our nations struggling workforce.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the movement progresses with during the upcoming election year.  For more information check out http://www.votetravel.org/, and if it strikes your fancy, sign up to support the Vote Travel movement.

Have A Little Faith: Trust And Teaching English Abroad

Valerie Wishaar

There are many characteristics that the international traveler tends to have in common. They are typically adventuresome, adaptable, open-minded and independent. But there is one characteristic that you must have and continue to build as you travel, live and/or teach abroad. You must trust. Trust the people around you, trust the systems and structures man has built there, and you must trust yourself.
